Dear Editor, You report four youths being investigated for stealing a rental car. What happened to them? Should we send them home and allow them to carry on their lives or should they be accountable?

Under cone of silence

Saturday 11 May 2019 | Published in Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor, Now that the re-sealing of the main road in Muri will shortly be completed, I do hope that the appropriate authorities in government will ensure that the household that has been placing cones on the roadside adjacent to the Muri Food Night Market, in an effort to charge motorists for parking, will be prevented from doing so.

MPs' pay rise is a rort

Friday 10 May 2019 | Published in Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor, Your article “Public vent at MP pay push” was validation of your publication’s Street Poll, where respondents all agreed our MPs are paid too much. The vast majority of our people locally and our Cookies abroad in Aotearoa, Australia and elsewhere would really disagree with deputy prime minister Mark Brown’s claim that our politicians are due more money because “the MPs have not had a pay rise for 14 years”. (“MPs deserve more pay, says Brown”, April 12).

Is it time for a ra'ui on lagoon?

Saturday 20 April 2019 | Published in Opinion

It is so easy to throw stones at others, especially when it comes to the subject of tourism, and I have been guilty of this while not looking in my own backyard and critical of practices by our own Cook Islands Maori with regard to the negative effects of tourism on our infrastructure and environment.

MPs are not worth more of our dollars

Wednesday 17 April 2019 | Published in Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor, Reading the CI News last Friday it was interesting to see DPM Mark Brown stating that Cook Islands Members of Parliament deserve a pay rise, because they've not had a pay rise for a number of years and it's time they had an increase in their basic rate.

The sweet and bitter taste of tourism

Monday 15 April 2019 | Published in Opinion

It’s like cutting into a thick creamy tower of a cake with our name Cook Islands on it. And as that sharp knife passes through its many layers, we at last get a glimpse of what we expected, and maybe didn’t expect, as each layer reveals itself.
