What's in our name?

Sunday 17 February 2019 | Written by Thomas Tarurongo Wynne | Published in Opinion

We name our children, we name our vaka taurua -- in fact we name all the parts of a voyaging vaka. We name our villages, our tapere, and the land we build our homes on has a name.

Enticing deal for new MP

Wednesday 13 February 2019 | Published in Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor, Reading the news in the papers following Mangaia's newly elected Demo MP Agnes Armstrong's by-election success, deputy prime minister Mark Brown was clearly the first cab off the ranks with the shocking news of Demo MP Te-Hani Brown's defection to the CIP coalition government.

Dear Editor, I wish to refer to the Clerk of the House of Ariki’s comments on TV where he says the House of Ariki disapproves of burials at sea because it goes against Cook Islands custom and that government should move to block this by legislation.

Consultation or slick sales pitch?

Monday 4 February 2019 | Published in Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor, The deep seabed minerals consultation held in Mauke last week leaves me asking, yet again, ‘what should a consultation look like?’ The dictionary says, in short, ‘A consultation is a meeting to deliberate a matter. Deliberate means to weigh up both sides.’

Calling for integrity and values

MOP plan no longer favoured by China?

Tuesday 15 January 2019 | Published in Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor, Merchant of Paradise (MOP) leader Tim Tepaki's letter in CINews’ Saturday issue was strange in criticising me rather than debating the relevant issues I raised. I laughed after reading his reply, and really had no intention of replying, but I realised that my reply is not just for Tepaki’s benefit, but also for those, who like me, wish he’d stop flogging his dead horse!

When our silence betrays us...

Sunday 13 January 2019 | Written by Thomas Tarurongo Wynne | Published in Opinion

On Sunday afternoons, I sit in the covered courtyard, looking around at the tables and chairs, and I see families reunited, fathers kissing children, holding their wives and partners as they sit down for a meal. This could be a scene at the Social Centre, the airport or anywhere around our beautiful paradise, but it is not.
