‘Hat off for focusing on the plight of this poor man’

Wednesday 12 October 2022 | Written by Supplied | Published in Letters to the Editor, Opinion

Dear Editor, Too frequently we read and hear about the egregious behaviour meted out by the Crown, or its servants but, consistent with those in positions to do something about it, nothing happens, and the perpetrators continue their merry way, abusing the rule of law with impunity.

LETTER: Queen’s Memorial ‘public holiday’

Monday 3 October 2022 | Written by Supplied | Published in Letters to the Editor, Opinion

Dear Editor, There is nothing like a good old debate regarding what constitutes a public holiday and what does not, not just in a legal sense but in a social sense. There is much confusion around this and unfortunately this has to rest with those who are charged with ensuring clarity around what is or is not recognised (by law) as a public holiday.

Public holiday proclamation: Questioning the authority

Thursday 29 September 2022 | Written by Supplied | Published in Letters to the Editor, Opinion

Dear Editor, With no disrespect for our late Sovereign, nor the King’s Representative, Sir Tom (Marsters), I have to question the putative authority being employed to give an aura of legitimacy to the Crown’s unilateral proclamation that Friday 30 September 2022 is a Public Holiday but more particularly, from an employer’s perspective, the urgent need to be reliably informed in view of the announcement that s. 38 of the Employment Relations Act 2012 applies along with all the responsibilities and commitments that entails.

LETTERS: Aitutaki claims top award

Saturday 24 September 2022 | Written by Supplied | Published in Letters to the Editor, Opinion

Dear Editor, I loved Aitutaki (Aitutaki crowned Oceania’s top island destination, September 23). I stayed at Tom’s Beach House and the ladies made me ei’s. I had the most amazing time and was only there a week. I rented/borrowed bike and rode all over and went on two lagoon tours. That was in 1999/2000 and […]

LETTERS: Dealing with increasing prices

Friday 23 September 2022 | Written by Supplied | Published in Letters to the Editor, Opinion

Dear Editor, Inflation isn’t forever. The question is why is everyone looking towards Europe and the war going on there and blaming the Russians for the soar in prices of produce and petrol etc, etc? No one’s looking towards Saudi Arabia who have the wealth of money but also the oil trade. No one’s talking […]

LETTERS: Prices on the rise

Thursday 22 September 2022 | Written by Supplied | Published in Letters to the Editor, Opinion

Dear Editor, There will be more increases as we progress ahead. The bakery is not to be blamed. All around the globe is terrible since the war between Ukraine and Russia and Covid-19. It’s not only us in the Cook Islands who are affected, its New Zealand, Australia and the rest of the world too. […]

LETTERS: Power bill rise ‘inevitable’

Wednesday 21 September 2022 | Written by Supplied | Published in Letters to the Editor, Opinion

Dear Editor, It was inevitable (Rarotonga electricity prices to increase by $0.15 per unit, September 20). Anyone who looks at the charts of fuel pricing on the major world indexes (Brent and West Texas) can see they have increased dramatically over the last 6-7 months. This is not just a one of blip for a […]

LETTERS: Accessing medicinal cannabis

Tuesday 20 September 2022 | Written by Supplied | Published in Letters to the Editor, Opinion

Dear Editor, Listen to this, while we’re waiting on the Government to introduce a medical marijuana plan, we can now import our own personally prescribed medical marijuana by mail from New Zealand. Certain criteria must be met in order to do this, namely, your first step is to discuss medicinal cannabis with your doctor over […]

LETTERS: Rising cost of living

Saturday 17 September 2022 | Written by Supplied | Published in Letters to the Editor, Opinion

Dear Editor, More reason to move back to New Zealand or Australia … with minimal wage, sky rocket interest rates at the bank, petrol diesel costs are high and food in general is of high cost, then by all means I’ll be more than happy to be an agent to recruit to support our locals […]

LETTERS: Only in the Cook Islands

Friday 16 September 2022 | Written by Supplied | Published in Letters to the Editor, Opinion

Dear Editor,   Before New Zealand could declare a public holiday to mark the passing of the Queen, I believe the matter had to be passed in parliament.   In Cook Islands, to declare a public holiday to do the same, the Prime Minister only had to make a statement from South Korea.   We […]

LETTERS: Award winning town plan

Thursday 15 September 2022 | Written by Supplied | Published in Letters to the Editor, Opinion

Dear Editor, Fabulous looking design – on paper – and clearly designed by people who sit in a lovely office behind computers somewhere remote, but who have absolutely no idea about the impact of the wind and waves when Mother Nature decides to get ferocious especially on that Northern coastline (‘20+ years timeframe’ for award winning […]

LETTERS: Health should be top priority

Monday 12 September 2022 | Written by Supplied | Published in Letters to the Editor, Opinion

Dear Editor, Our health systems in the whole of the Cook Islands should be the main priority that should be addressed and not this beautification of town (Designer’s Cook Islands climate crisis plans win two international awards, Tuesday, September 6, 2022). If the government and future generations want to invest in the Cook Islands, then […]

Friday 9 September 2022 | Written by Supplied | Published in Letters to the Editor, Opinion

Dear Editor, I recently read an article in your newspaper about the exploitation of Cook Island workers in New Zealand. I sympathise greatly with them and know that this is something happening a lot in New Zealand especially with seasonal workers at places like Katikati which is a centre for the kiwi fruit and avocado industry. I think it […]

LETTERS: Accountability for wrongdoing

Tuesday 6 September 2022 | Written by Supplied | Published in Letters to the Editor, Opinion

Dear Editor, It doesn’t offend me as a Cook Islander to read this because it needs to come out (18 months’ probation for $5k justice ministry theft, Cook Islands News, Monday, September 5). And why not. About time. Some have been in Government positions for over 30 years and probably abusing the system like what’s […]

LETTERS: Lost tourists and duty of care

Friday 2 September 2022 | Written by Supplied | Published in Letters to the Editor, Opinion

Kia orana editor, There was a recent front-page story about tourists who became disoriented and lost their way while doing the cross-island trek. In response, the Police media spokesman seemed to think that prosecution of lost tourists to recover the costs of potential rescue efforts might be a way to deter such occurrences. In fact, […]
