Wednesday 28 June 2017 | Published in Letters to the Editor

I would like to raise an issue on our guest visitors that have been treated in our hospital here in Rarotonga who did not pay their kaiou before they left the island.

Parliament needs advice from Kiwi expert

Monday 26 June 2017 | Published in Letters to the Editor

I was interested to hear the Speaker on Thursday announce the presence here of a former Deputy Clerk of the NZ parliament, Debra Angus, to assist in a review of the Parliamentary Standing Orders and I would suggest such review is not before time.

Landowners frustrated too

Thursday 22 June 2017 | Published in Letters to the Editor

I read with interest Arthur Pickering’s story of his frustration with the government for not considering the consequences of actions government takes without consultation with stakeholders.

Thank you Thomas Wynne

Thursday 22 June 2017 | Published in Letters to the Editor

Saturday’s CI News had Thomas Wynne’s plea that as a culture we get around to fixing decades of turning a blind eye to the systematic sexual abuse of our women and girls and on the facing page NZ Prime Minister Bill English crowing about the $15 million that NZ is to contribute to a submarine cable to allow us to play video games all the faster.

Excuses, but no proof, over PM's welcome

Thursday 22 June 2017 | Published in Letters to the Editor

Obviously the House of Ariki president and his advisers needed to justify to their many critics why they copied the New Zealand Maori custom of wero on their marae for the occasion of the New Zealand PM's visit.

For those who don't follow vaka-jumping laws

Tuesday 20 June 2017 | Published in Letters to the Editor

The front page story in the Saturday edition about Rose Brown shows some political hangers-on still don’t understand the law about “vaka jumping”.

Final nail in coalition coffin?

Tuesday 20 June 2017 | Published in Letters to the Editor

It should be clarified that the member for Teenui-Mapumai Rose Brown made her arbitrary decision to leave the Cook Islands Party following PM Puna’s “gift” of a ministerial position (complete with large salary plus all the “ministerial extras”) which was offered to the then- Demo MP Albert Nicholas of RAPPA, to actively entice him to leave the Demo Party and cross the floor, to join with the CIP government as a new Crown minister.

Internal affairs boss has duty to respond

Monday 19 June 2017 | Published in Letters to the Editor

I do not want to prolong the debate unnecessarily, but the matter of the Workers’ Compensation Fund is nowhere near resolved and I certainly do not accept for one moment that the Acting Secretary can so casually dismiss any further public engagement on it when there are matters which clearly fall to him to respond (CI News June 10).

Stop picking on pensioners

In 2013 a Richard Neves-driven CIP government turned a blind eye to a massive $26 million worth of unpaid tax (now this figure has grown to $32 million according to Finance minister Mark Brown.

Dictatorship in disguise

Monday 12 June 2017 | Published in Letters to the Editor

It is good to know Robin Nair, the former ambassador and former Foreign Affairs permanent secretary in the Bainimarama regime in Fiji, has come to realise the civil servants in that country work in a climate of fear in a militarised democracy (CI News June 1, reproduced in Fijileaks).

Punishment too light

Monday 12 June 2017 | Published in Letters to the Editor

I read in the newspaper this morning about some of the crime that happened last weekend and it really made me angry at how lightly these people are punished.

More insurance questions

Monday 12 June 2017 | Published in Letters to the Editor

On the subject of Employers Liability Insurance Scheme & Workers Compensation Fund, now that we have the financial details from ELI and as partly indicated in Internal Affairs acting secretary Paul Allsworth’s media release, can we please have a breakdown of how many work-related accidents have been recorded in the Cook Islands over the last decade or two and how much insurance cover was paid out?

The case for armed police unit

Friday 9 June 2017 | Published in Letters to the Editor

Ex-New Zealand Police Senior Sergeant Norman George’s letter in CI News on May 30 was absolutely correct in criticising Mark Brown’s reluctance to put in place a specialist police first response armed offenders squad, in preparation for the next incident involving firearms.
