Motorists asked to take extra care

Monday 16 April 2018 | Published in Local

Infrastructure Cook Islands (ICI) is undertaking “remedial emergency maintenance work” on roads around Rarotonga and is urging motorists to take extra care as crews work on repairs. ICI corporate director Diane Charlie-Puna said yesterday ICI had begun “emergency response action”, which would focus on clearing drains and streams. Crews were focusing on the most heavily-affected areas, with work already having begun in Muri and Nikao. Charlie-Puna said finance minister Mark Brown had requested urgent action be taken to repair damaged infrastructure. ICI’s planning and design team had “hit the roads” on Wednesday to begin identifying potential hazards around the island, she added. Earlier this week ICI’s road works division manager Vaipo Mataora said road conditions around the island had become worse as a result of flash flooding. Last weekend a foreign worker was lucky to escape serious injury as a result of being thrown off his motorbike after hitting a pothole near Titikaveka College.
