Vaka Marumaru Atua heads back home
Mangaia students had a chance to explore Vaka Marumaru Atua before it departed for Rarotonga yesterday. JACKIE RONGO/21092728

Crew member Pareu Pera talking about their time aboard the Marumaru Atua.

Day 14 – It’s a beautiful Monday on Mangaia! It is our last day here before the Vaka sails back to Rarotonga and the Tāua e Moana voyage is finished. Zeb took us on a tour of the island yesterday and into the cave Tuatini in Puna Veivei.

Today, we just finished doing our programme with the kids in the school, teaching them how to tie knots, lock-off cleats, and Vaka safety. The Mangaia kids are now going on the Vaka to have a little tour around to see what kind of jobs we do.  Hopefully, they will be interested to sail one day.  While I am waiting for the barge to come back with the students, I am having a swim in the harbour.

I loved this whole voyage from the north to the south as I learned heaps and made new friends.  I am looking forward to hopefully sailing on the Vaka to Aitutaki in October for the 200-year celebration of the gospel arriving in the Cook Islands.

Hoping for a smooth sail back to Rarotonga today!  Kia Orana!
