Get ready to have a ball! The Cook Islands Breast Cancer Foundation is bringing glitz and glamour to Rarotonga, while raising vital funds and awareness about breast cancer.

Recent statistics are sobering - Te Marae Ora (TMO) says there are currently 1,900 women in the Cook Islands who are overdue for mammograms

Given that breast cancer affects more Cook Islands women than any other cancer, early detection isn’t just critical, it saves lives.

For 20 years, the Cook Islands Breast Cancer Foundation (CIBCF) has been at the forefront of raising awareness and funds for provision of vital services including funding travel for women from the pa enua to get their breasts screening.

CIBCF President Jaewynn McKay says mammograms play a crucial role in early detection, identifying 85-90 per cent of breast cancers even in asymptomatic women.

Timely screenings detect cases early when treatment options are most effective.

“Given these figures, the Foundation emphasises the critical need for timely access to mammograms, as a backlog of this size risks some cancers going undiagnosed until they progress to more advanced stages, requiring more aggressive treatment and reducing chances of positive outcome.”

The Ribbons of Hope: Early Detection Ball will take place on Saturday, November 30 at the Ngatangiia Rugby Grounds.

“Starting at 6 pm, the evening promises top-tier entertainment, featuring celebrated New Zealand vocal artists, the Lady Killers, alongside The Moko’s and One-Man Band Jarome Pare.”

This year’s guest speaker is Pasifika Medical Association and Pasifika Futures CEO Debbie Sorensen.

For Debbie, breast cancer is more than personal.

Diagnosed in April 2022, Debbie will share insights about her own journey - the laughter and low days and most of all the importance of breast screening, treatment, family, and community support.

Renowned in New Zealand, The Lady Killers—Tina Cross, Suzanne Lynch, and Jackie Clarke—are a powerhouse trio known for their dynamic harmonies spanning gospel, pop, R&B, jazz, country, and rock. Their music and energy will truly make the night unforgettable.

They’re well-seasoned professional vocalists doing what they do best - singing from the heart and soul.

Tina, Jackie, and Suzie make beautiful music bursting with harmony and are sure to lift the roof with their energy.

Jackie Clarke is also an ambassador for New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation and actively campaigns promoting and encouraging women to be vigilant about their breasts.

ClBCF has also extended an invitation to the community to get creative with the Ribbons of Hope Mannequin Decorating Competition.

This unique competition, taking place under the marquee on the day of the Ball, invites participants to create beautiful, thoughtful designs that embody the spirit of hope and support.

Individual tickets to the Ribbons of Hope: Early Detection Ball are $150, while tables of 10 can be purchased for $1500 and VIP tables of 10 for $2000.

Tickets include an arrival drink for each guest, dinner, and entertainment. The VIP tables include dinner beverages and a few other treats.
