A woman has pleaded guilty to excess blood alcohol “to move on with her life” in the Criminal Court at Avarua.

Maite Teamo pleaded guilty through her lawyer Mark Short on Thursday.

“She would like to have this matter done today so she can at least move on,” Short said.

The court heard on April 9 this year a woman fell off her motor bike in Titikaveka after drinking. A neighbour saw the crash and called police. A blood test confirmed she was over the legal alcohol driving limit.

It was Teamo’s first appearance in court.

For excess blood alcohol, Justice of the Peace Georgina Keenan-Williams disqualified Teamo for driving for 12 months, fined her $350, also an additional $50 court costs and $150 for the blood test.

The JP also fined Teamo $50 for careless driving and an additional $50 for court costs.

Pending charges

A man who has charges dating back to 2018 is yet to make a plea and did not know his lawyer withdrew as counsel in the Criminal Court at Avarua on Thursday.

Michael Brown is charged with three counts of refusing a breath test, dangerous reckless driving and careless driving.

The court heard Brown did not know his lawyer was no longer representing him.

Prosecution asked for one more adjournment but said it would probably be the last.

“These matters have been dragging on,” the prosecution said.

Justice of the Peace Georgina Keenan-Williams told Brown “these (charges) have been outstanding since 2018 so it's been going on for ages”.

“If this carries on, we will have to enter a not guilty plea for you and go to trial, do you understand?”

The matter is adjourned for July 14, the JP told the defendant it should give him enough time to find a lawyer.
