Dear Editor,
I find it very difficult to understand the logic behind Mr Poila’s threat to reject the EU funding to build a cyclone centre in Pukapuka just because a Pukapukan designer missed out on the tender.
Why not be HAPPY and thankful that EU has come to the party to fund the project? I suggest they just get on with the job and get it started instead of bickering about it.
I understand the successful tender have got local counterparts involved in the project so is he going to deny these Cook Islanders the opportunity to make money because they are not Pukapukans.
Poila don’t live in Pukapuka, so he should stay out of it and stop interfering. Just let the project go ahead so that the people actually living on Pukapuka will get their cyclone shelter that they have been asking for since 2005.
Sure the people in Pukapuka like many of the outer islands has survived many cyclones with no cyclone centres but this is not an excuse for Poila to deny them in getting their own centre. Maybe if he is living in Pukapuka today I’m sure you will be singing a different tune.
