Wet weekend ahead for Cook Islands
Cook Islands Meteorological Service staff.

Despite some clear skies earlier this week, a few showers are expected again for the rest of the week with light rain during the weekend, and heavy rain next week.

The Cook Islands Meteorology Service advised that there will be a few showers from broken clouds until Friday, light rain throughout the weekend, moderate rain on Monday and heavy downpours again on Tuesday next week with 86 per cent humidity to be recorded.

The country experienced a mix of cloudy conditions and rain over the last weekend, with the Southern Cooks facing more significant weather disturbances.

A trough of low pressure is influencing the weather in the Southern Cooks, bringing occasional rain and isolated thunderstorms, while the Northern Cooks are expected to experience generally fine weather with brief showers.

According to the latest weather bulletins, the Southern Cooks, including Rarotonga, saw intermittent showers and isolated thunderstorms earlier this week.

Moderate to fresh north-westerly winds were also predicted, contributing to moderate to rough seas in the region.

The outlook for Monday slightly improved, with the Southern Cooks experiencing cloudy periods with some showers and isolated thunderstorms, but overall, the region should remain fine apart from brief showers.

The north-westerly winds were expected to persist, moderating throughout the day.

For the Northern Cooks, conditions were expected to be milder with mostly fine weather, apart from brief showers. Moderate to fresh east to northeast winds will prevail, with moderate to rough seas.

Residents and visitors in the Southern Cooks are advised to be prepared for occasional rain and thunderstorms, with gusty winds and rough seas potentially affecting travel and outdoor activities.

The Meteorology Office is recommending to take precautions, particularly when planning sea-related activities, given the rough conditions expected in the coming days.

As the holiday season continues, both locals and visitors are urged to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and to exercise caution when outdoors.
