Cook Islands Touch weekly competition gains momentum
Nukz Power team at the Boxing Day competition in December. COOK ISLANDS TOUCH/23020727

The second round of the Cook Islands Touch weekly competition saw some exciting matches on Monday at the National Stadium in Nikao, after rain and wind in the opening week.

In the men’s division, Nukz Power played Germinators led by Andy Kapi. The Germinators who had a team of experienced older “generators” such as Clive Nicholas and Chris Kapi to name a few defeated Nukz Power 4-nil.

On field two, Atiu Warriors took on team KAPs. In a bit of a one-sided game, the Warriors won the clash 7-3.

In the women’s category, Nukz Power took on team Nikz which comprised of mum and daughters, Edith, Maeva and Mele, who definitely showed they were related from the smooth play displayed by the trio. Both daughters scored a try each.

Nukz Power led by Rima Browne had a full squad and definitely used that to their advantage playing with six mids. This allowed their playmakers to breath whilst on break. The match proved to be a tough one with Nukz Power taking this game out with a score of 3-2.

The last lot of men’s games was an epic battle between Germinators and Atiu Warriors on field one. Germinators started on a high scoring two tries early to secure the lead but Atiu Warriors bounced back.

Young Warrior Tana Raina scored a hattrick having to catch three very super-fast passes under pressure but then Andy Kapi himself came back with a neat dive right through two Warriors players. This game went right down to the wire ending in 5-all draw.

On field two, Nukz Power took on team GAT. Nukz Power seemed to pick up on their play and were able to score a couple of tries. GAT won the match 5-2.

Today, the mixed games that were supposed to have been played last week will be held.

Cook Islands Touch president Julz Westrupp said: “We are excited to see two U18s teams that will also be nutting it out in the open mixed. Good luck teams.  See you on the 7m.”
