As the 2024 Rarotonga football season approaches, anticipation is high for the Women’s Championship, where teams will vie for glory and a chance to qualify for the prestigious OFC Women's Champions League (OFC WCL).

Last year’s champions, Avatiu FC, will be looking to retain their title amidst fierce competition.

Cook Islands Football Association (CIFA) takes a closer look at the participating teams and what we can expect from them this season.

Avatiu FC

Avatiu FC last year became the first Cook Islands women’s team to qualify and compete in the OFC Women's Champions League. They clinched the league title by a narrow margin of two points ahead of their rivals, Tupapa Maraerenga.

Head coach Ziona Tutai shares their preparation plans.

“Preparing the team to defend the title is a work in progress. Fitness and ball drills are areas we’re focusing on, and we’ve emphasised attitude, commitment, fun, and respect for each other,” said Tutai.

“Our strategy will include speed in our gameplay and rotating players in different positions. Every game will be a challenge, and we aim to play consistently throughout the season to defend our title.”

Tupapa Maraerenga

Tupapa Maraerenga narrowly missed out on the championship last season, falling short by just two points. This year, they are determined to claim the title and secure their spot in the OFC WCL 2025.

Head coach Andrew Iroa shared insights into their preparation.

“We started with a pre-season strength and conditioning programme to build our players’ physical readiness. Our main goal is to win the Round Cup and the Knockout finals.”

The team has also focused on building a strong team culture, especially with the inclusion of younger players from the U15 girls.

Puaikura FC

Puaikura FC has consistently been a top contender in the league.

Known for their robust defence and strategic play, they are always in the mix for the title.

This season, the team is focusing on integrating new players and enhancing their defensive strategies to ensure consistent performance throughout the season.

Matavera FC

Matavera FC had a mixed season last year but triumphed in the CIFA Knockout Cup, showcasing their potential.

Head coach Raymond Newnham is realistic yet optimistic about the new season. “Winning the Cup was a great experience, but we need to start afresh. We’ve been working hard in training, especially with some new additions to the squad,” Newnham said.

The team includes five Cook Islands national representatives who will be pivotal in their campaign.

Titikaveka FC

Titikaveka FC had a challenging season last year but is looking to bounce back stronger.

With a young squad guided by seasoned players, they are eager to make a mark. The team’s primary objectives this season are to rebuild and focus on tactical improvements.

Keeping the team motivated and focused will be key to their success.

Nikao Sokattak FC

Nikao Sokattak FC faced a tough season last year, but the youthful energy and potential within the team were evident.

Head coach Angela Wallbank highlighted the crossover of sports on the island means “our players have been involved in various activities, essentially forming their pre-season preparation”.

“Our focus is on technical and tactical development, especially supporting the transition from U15 to the women’s grade.”

Building on last year’s culture and team cohesion is a priority for Wallbank and her squad.

As the season kicks off on July 24, fans are eager to see which team will emerge victorious and secure a place in the OFC Women’s Champions League. Will Avatiu FC retain their title, or will Tupapa Maraerenga seize the opportunity to become champions? Perhaps Puaikura, Matavera, Titikaveka, or Nikao Sokattak will rise to the occasion and claim the top spot.

One thing is certain – this season promises thrilling matches and unforgettable moments in women’s football.
