Tereora College, in conjunction with the Cook Islands Football Association (CIFA), orchestrated a football festival of epic proportions this week.

This enthralling event was no ordinary end-of-year activity; it was a vibrant showcase of community spirit, youthful energy, and a shared love for the beautiful game.

As the academic year begins to close and the Christmas break looms on the horizon, the innovative teachers at Tereora College envisioned a unique way to conclude the term. They reached out to CIFA with a proposal to host a day of football, filled with excitement and camaraderie. The idea was bold and beautiful, and CIFA, thrilled at the prospect, jumped on board with unbridled enthusiasm.

The day’s comprehensive plan was meticulously crafted by CIFA’s women developer, Tupou Brogan. Known for her dedication and organisational prowess, Brogan managed to encapsulate the essence of the beautiful game in a single-day event.

The festival’s team composition was a testament to its inclusive spirit, with Year 9 and 10 boys and girls all taking to the pitch. The teams were formed in the students’ anau classes, creating a unique blend of academic and athletic camaraderie for the day of exciting activity. It was a wonderful representation of the diverse, close-knit sporting community that Tereora College and CIFA are proud to be a part of.

The matches were an electrifying spectacle, played in a fast-paced five-a-side format. Each game consisted of two adrenaline-pumping halves of seven minutes each, resulting in a total of 14 minutes of action-packed football. CIFA provided all the necessary equipment, including referees, to ensure fair play and a smooth event.

The turnout for the festival was phenomenal. Over 100 students took to the field, showcasing a range of skills from beginners to experienced players. It was truly inspiring to see students from the CIFA academies participating, demonstrating their passion for football and their commitment to improving their skills.

However, the highlight of the festival was undoubtedly the final match. In an unplanned match which was decided at last minute to entertain the students while Brogan tallied the scores, the teachers of Tereora College squared off against the CIFA staff in a thrilling showdown that had the grandstand buzzing with anticipation.

With every goal attempt, pass, and tackle, the excitement grew, reaching a fever pitch as the crowd roared their support. However, it was the Teachers of Tereora who took the win with a 1-0 score.

This unique football festival beautifully bridged the gap between academia and sport, creating an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. It was a fitting close to the year, and a testament to the power of community engagement and shared passions.

As the festive season rings in, CIFA eagerly anticipate more innovative collaborations with Tereora College to continue to promote the love for the beautiful game.
