Fans were treated to a thrilling contest, which ended in dramatic fashion with Tabusoro claiming a hard-fought 32-27 victory.
Both teams entered the match determined to secure their first win, and the energy on the field reflected that hunger. The lead changed hands multiple times, with each side battling hard to outdo the other.
With just one minute left on the clock, the score was locked at 27-27. Tabusoro found themselves in a prime attacking position, five metres from the Residents’ try line.
Seizing the moment, the Tabusoro backs orchestrated a brilliant play that sent replacement winger Tomasi Vanuarua over the line for the winning try, much to the delight of their enthusiastic supporters.
The final whistle blew, and Tabusoro emerged victorious with a 32-27 win after 80 minutes of intense rugby.
Tabusoro- FJ-CK head coach George Fatafehi shared: “I wanted the boys to go out there and deliver and most of the hard yards can only be done by them while playing.”
“I wanted the boys to don the jersey with pride and give it a full 80 minutes rugby, no excuses, just get out there and get the work done.”
Tabusoro led for much of the match, but the Cook Islands Residents refused to back down. The local team was bolstered by the tireless efforts of their “bomb squad” – a dynamic tag team of front rowers Tua Tepai and Daniel Tonorio, with Toru Katuke and Paki Mani stepping up as replacements. Their relentless drive kept the Residents in the contest, ensuring the game remained close throughout.
At halftime, Tabusoro led 19-15, having made the most of their opportunities in the backs. However, the Residents’ forwards continued to grind, keeping the match within reach.
For the Cook Islands Residents, strong-running inside centre Rob Heather was a standout performer, helping to drive his team forward. The powerful pack, led by the “Bomb Squad”, was complemented by the loose forwards, with Li Ponini and young Alistair Newbigging putting in solid shifts.
On the Tabusoro side, it was their backline that shone the brightest. Powerful centre Viliami Temo led the charge, while fullback Mafu Kalas proved dangerous with his counter-attacks and accurate goal-kicking. Scrumhalf Jale Lagidela added electric pace, keeping the Cook Islands defense on their toes.
Tabusoro Fiji CK crossed the line five times, with Petero Lagilagi scoring twice, alongside tries from Pita Senibiakula, Rusi Nakute, and match-winner Tomasi Vanuarua. Kalas added two conversions and a penalty.
Cook Islands Residents responded with tries from Tai Taio (two), Thomas Toa, and an automatic penalty try worth seven points. Toa also contributed with conversions and a penalty.
