For the first time since Nikao Sokattak in 2022, the Cook Islands will be represented at an OFC Men’s Champions

League, with Tupapa Maraerenga FC confirming their place following a successful qualifying campaign on home soil in February.

Tuka Tisam’s side were made to work hard for their place, however. A 3-3 draw against American Samoa’s Royal Puma in their opening fixture was followed up by an impressive come-from-behind 2-1 win against favourites Vaipuna SC of Samoa to book their spot in Group B.

Tisam won’t be returning to lead the team in Honiara, with Mii Piri-Savage – who was part of the coaching set-up during qualification – stepping into the role.

Whilst managing to avoid the daunting challenge of Group A, Tupapa will still have their work cut out for them, with 2023 semi-finalists Ifira Black Bird their opening opponent, before a clash with host-nation side Central Coast FC. The Cook Islanders will then finish the group stage against former champions Hekari United.

Despite the change in head coach, Piri-Savage is happy with the preparations for her side as they look forward to the challenge that awaits them in Honiara.

“We know this championship will be another level, so we’re staying focused and working hard to be as ready as possible,” Piri-Savage said.

“Tuka Tisam has been leading the team, and I’ve been assisting him. As he’s unable to travel, I’ll be stepping in as head coach, but we are still working closely together to ensure the team is well-prepared,” she said.

Despite their excellent performances in the qualifying stage – a 3-3 draw against Royal Puma FC before a 2-1 victory over Vaipuna SC – Piri-Savage is well aware of the increase in quality when it comes to the OFC Men’s Champions League.

“It’s going to be a big challenge. These teams have strong records in the region, but we’ll focus on our game, give our best effort, and compete as best as we can,” she said.
