The Cook Islands under-16 men’s football team is gearing up for the OFC U16 Men’s Championship, which will take place from July 28th to August 10th, 2024 in Tahiti.

In an interview with CIFA Media, head coach Ngatupuna Manuela has provided an update on the team’s preparation and strategies for the tournament.

Coach Manuela has emphasised a well-rounded approach to the team’s preparation.

“I have focused on several crucial developmental approaches to the game,” he explains.

This includes workshops on mental fortitude by John Glassie, the national under-21 netball team coach, and insights into professional routines from national paddler Andre Tutaka-George.

Previous sessions have also covered social aspects, goalsetting, and team philosophy. Transparency has been a key component, with efforts made to keep players and caregivers informed throughout the process.

Cook Islands is in Group A with New Zealand, Vanuatu, and Fiji.

Manuela has focused on maintaining a compact defensive shape to minimise spaces between lines, particularly in the defensive and midfield areas. “Communication has been crucial in our development process,” he notes. Offensively, this strategy allows the team to create numerical superiority and break through defensive lines.

Manuela is looking forward to the tournament as a significant milestone.

“As a first-time coach in such a prestigious tournament, I am committed to ensuring that our team is well-prepared,” he said.

The primary goal is to compete effectively and use this experience as a crucial step in the players’ football careers.

In preparation for the competition, the team has played friendly matches against a mix of senior men and U19 men, including national and non-national players. “Competing against seasoned players allows our team to learn first-hand what the next level entails,” Manuela explains.

The outcomes of these matches have provided valuable insights into effective strategies and areas needing improvement. Feedback from senior players has been instrumental in guiding the young athletes and fostering their growth.

As the team gets ready to head to Tahiti, they are equipped with the skills, strategies, and mental preparedness needed for the OFC U16 Men’s Championship.

The entire nation will be cheering them on, eager to support their young talents on the international stage.
