Matavera were high on possession through the game, but couldn’t seem to get past Avatiu defenders Jarves Aperau and Maruhi who kept the Maroons attackers at bay.
In a tit-for-tat tussle both teams had opportunities but it was Avatiu who capitalised on it. A mistake from Matavera’s goal keeper allowed the unmarked Avatiu’s Viiga Reupena to speed right through to put the ball at the back of the net.
The 1-0 lead spurred Avatiu’s “golden giants” who pushed for possession and dominated play.
Matavera’s Luke Areai along with Ed Brogan made tireless attempts to push Avatiu into their half but the visitors had other ideas.
In the second half Avatiu ran rampant scoring four more goals before Matavera pulled one back to win the match 5-1.
The senior women’s match between the two clubs ended in a nil-all draw, forcing them to go into a penalty shootout that had everybody on the edge of their seats.
Avatiu won 3-2.
In the other women’s match Titikaveka thumped Nikao Sokattak 4-0 while in the premier men’s, Titikaveka beat Puaikura 3-1.
