According to Cook Islands Football Association, the school programme, first introduced in 2009, has seen a multitude of students pass through its ranks, each leaving with improved skills, a deeper understanding of teamwork, and most importantly, cherished memories.
In the spirit of fostering sportsmanship and talent among the young minds, the tournament has become a beacon of hope and excitement in the first term of the school year, CIFA adds.
The weekly competition which will be held over the next couple of weeks kicked off with seven schools participating. The schools are Apii Avarua, Nukutere College, Apii Nikao, Apii Arorangi, Titikaveka College, Te Uki Ou and Papaaroa.
“The tournament is not just about competition; it is a culmination of weeks of diligent preparation,” CIFA said in a statement. “CIFA technical staff, with their wealth of experience and passion for the game, embark on a journey to various schools, imparting the essence of football through intensive soccer training sessions.”
“These sessions, spanning the first two weeks prior to the tournament, focus on ball manipulation, passing practice, and engaging in small-sided games. This hands-on approach ensures that students from all participating schools are well-versed in the intricacies of the sport before they step onto the pitch to represent their schools.”
The tournament is also another opportunity for CIFA to identify potential candidates to join the growing academy which the association has committed to deliver and nurture young talent.
The tournament will continue on Friday, starting at 1pm. CIFA would like to encourage parents to come along and join the excitement.
