Titikaveka Bulldogs faced the determined Tupapa Panthers in the opening premier men’s match of week two last night. Both teams lost their week one matches to the Bears and the Eels, respectively.
The Panthers managed to bounce back beating the Bulldogs 32-0 at Aretere Park.
However the highlight of this weekend’s matches will undoubtedly be the clash between the Eels and the Bears. This encounter promises to be a strong and competitive match, featuring several standout players from last week who will be crucial in maintaining their teams’ momentum.
For the Eels, fullback Tamatoa Nicholas, who scored their only try last week, will be a key player. His ability to read the game and exploit gaps in the opposition’s defence makes him a constant threat, and his solid positional play and counter-attacking skills are vital assets.
First five-eighth Viiga Reupena, who converted Nicholas’ try and kicked three critical penalty goals, including the match-winner, will need to display the same precision and calm under pressure. Reupena’s tactical kicking, game management and ability to direct play will be key factors in navigating the Bears’ defence.
Additionally, loose forward Adyn Kapi’s high work rate and physicality were key last week. His ability to secure possession at the breakdown and his relentless tackling will be crucial in disrupting the Bears’ offensive flow and gaining turnovers.
For the Bears, the Heather brothers were dominant last week. Robert and Taua each scored two tries, showcasing their strength, agility and power, making them significant threats in the attacking phase.
Robert’s role in the scrums and lineouts provided stability and control, essential for gaining and maintaining possession. Taua’s ability to break through defensive lines and create scoring opportunities will be critical in challenging the Eels’ defence.
Heath Heather added another try and played a key role in the forward pack, supporting both attack and defence with his robust playing style. Furthermore, prop Daniel Tonorio’s strength in scrums and support in breakdowns were instrumental in driving the team forward. His scrummaging technique and ability to anchor the front row will be crucial in setting a solid platform for the Bears’ attacking plays.
In addition to the senior matches, several development games in the junior divisions will be held today. The U8 to U16 teams will take the field in a Country vs. Town format, promoting grassroots rugby and fostering young talent.
The Maine Tueporo will also have an outing, with Maine White and Maine Black teams providing game opportunities for young girls.
