The opening match of the week held on Friday at Aretere Park in Avatiu saw the Tupapa Panthers triumph over the Titikaveka Bulldogs with a final score of 32-0.
The scoreline may have been flattering to the Panthers, not reflecting the Bulldogs’ spirited effort. Possession was evenly split between the two teams, but the Panthers’ ability to execute and turn opportunities into points was the key difference. The majority of the Panthers’ tries came from turnover ball, showcasing their team cohesion and connection.
Standout players for the Bulldogs included their energetic fullback William Rani, busy loose forward Petero Tumutoa, and utility backs, brothers Tangi and Brian Akava. For the Panthers, the young Willie brothers – T J at Number 8 and prop Olive – were instrumental. Their strong-running backline, featuring Fereti Anau, Tomasi Wellington and Tua Ravula, caused plenty of problems for the opposition.
The Panthers led 20-0 at halftime.
On Saturday at Aretere Park, home side Avatiu Nikao Eels narrowly defeated the Arorangi Bears 12-3. Although the Bears led for the majority of the match with a score of 3-0, the Eels’ self-confidence and self-belief shone through in the end. The Eels scored two late tries in the last 10 minutes of play, securing their victory in what was otherwise a stop-start affair.
Top performers for the Bears included their young counter-attacking fullback Nia Remuera, busy flanker Kianna Pomare and reliable veteran hooker Rob Heather. For the Eels, hard-working lock Adyn Kapi and under-rated halfback Jale Lagidela stood out.
The Bears led 3-0 at halftime thanks to a penalty by Nia Remuera.
Tupapa’s Tamaitumaru Jr Willie and Avatiu’s Adyn Kapi were named Man of the Match for their respective games.
Additionally, Saturday afternoon featured numerous junior development games and the Girls Maine Tueporo, focusing on nurturing young rugby talent.
These events provided a valuable platform for emerging athletes to display their skills and gain experience, promising a bright future for Cook Islands rugby.
