Tupapa Panthers finished day one of the Papeete Sevens tournament in Tahiti, French Polynesia, undefeated after three wins yesterday.

The Tupapa Panthers roared into action with a statement performance in their opening match at the Papeete Sevens tournament, delivering a resounding 45-0 victory against the seasoned Punaauia Club.

Despite the local side’s initial pressure, the Panthers found their stride early, displaying a lethal combination of speed, skill and tactical precision to dismantle their opposition.

Captain Colati Ravula was the architect of the win, directing play from the centre with remarkable vision. His ability to manipulate the defence created space for the Panthers’ lightning-quick wingers – Tomasi Wellington, Bilson Sewa, and Brian Akava – all of whom capitalised on the gaps to secure tries.

Ravula’s leadership and ability to control the tempo of the game were key in setting up these attacking opportunities. His quick decision-making at the breakdowns ensured smooth ball distribution, allowing the Panthers to maintain momentum throughout the match.

Mafu Kalas and Jason Potoru sharing at scrum-half, provided a crucial link between the forwards and backs, driving the attack forward with swift and accurate passes. Kalas’ and Potoru’s work in rhythm with Ravula was instrumental in breaking down Punaauia’s defensc. Ravula himself was rewarded with a try, expertly finishing a play he initiated by slicing through a fragmented defensive line.

The Panthers’ defence was equally impressive. They successfully kept Punaauia scoreless, demonstrating their skill in both open play and set pieces. Aggressive tackling, clean turnovers at the breakdown, and excellent ruck management left Punaauia with few attacking options.

Reflecting on the team’s performance, Captain Ravula noted, “It was a good start, but we need to cut down on our mistakes and do better in the next game.”

In their remaining matches, the Panthers defeated Huahine 35-5 before overcoming fellow Cook Islands team Te Au Toa 19-5. The Darren Piri-coached side will play Rugby Club de Pirae this morning before the final playoffs.
