The Rarotonga club has approximately 50 paddlers, including juniors and seniors ranging in age from 10 to 60 years and older.
With such a variety of ages, the club community replicates a sense of family and community.
At the start of every year, before the racing season begins, the club invites the community to give the sport a try as well as the opportunity to join their group.
Avid paddler, Ioana Turia, has stepped up this year taking on the role of president of Ngakau Toa Vaka after holding the vice presidency role last year.
“Paddling is an awesome sport to get involved in, especially with the beautiful lagoon and ocean we have,” said Turia.
“It’s important for athletes to step into the admin side of sports during their sporting careers.
“I love paddling, it’s a sport I’ve been involved in for the past 15 years, it’s taken me to different countries and given me many experiences.”
According to Turia, there are two aspects to a sport – it requires both commitment and discipline.
“Besides discipline and commitment, paddling has also given me appreciation for the ocean, the environment and the weather conditions, which is important knowledge to understand when living on an island.”
Turia urges novice paddlers to join the Ngakau Toa paddlers this afternoon and have some fun out on the water and make new friends.
