Cook Islands Football Association (CIFA) says they are pleased with the level of competition witnessed at the 2022 Cook Islands Beach Games beach football tournament last week.

The beach football competition was held from Thursday to Saturday at the Nikao beach courts.

Tupapa’s Black Wolves retained the men’s title while Spice Queenz claimed the women’s title.

Pauline Dean, CIFA’s competition and club licencing manager, said: “The beach football competition was exciting to watch in both the men’s and women’s divisions. Having a couple of new teams participate this year together with a number of familiar teams from last year was good to see.”

“Because it is the second year of playing beach football, majority of the teams and players are familiar with the basic rules and playing on the sand, making it fun and competitive for all who participated.

“Strong teams asserting their dominance early on day one while other teams looking to enjoying the game and finding their form in day two and final match day.”

Black Wolves finished the tournament unbeaten with five wins amassing the maximum 15 points followed by Onetox in second place with three wins, a draw and a loss on 10 points. With two wins, a draw and two losses, Spice Guys finished in third place.

In the women’s competition, Spice Queenz were unbeaten – four wins and a draw (13 points) – followed by former champions Ladies in Black with three wins, a loss and a draw.

Third placed Vibers also managed three wins, a loss and a draw but lost out to Ladies in Black on goal difference.

Meanwhile beach touch at the Nikao beach courts and 3x3 basketball at the Edgewater courts started yesterday.

Beach volleyball and air badminton will be the final events at this year’s Beach Games.
