Ngere Puia-Fraser, the 2023 Netball in Paradise competition manager, reflected on the games that hosted over 200 players and supporters from December 2 to 7 at the National Sports Arena in Nikao.
Puia-Fraser noted the fierce competition, especially in the Mixed Division, where teams were required to have at least one male player and no more than three on the court at any time.
She also praised the exceptional ball skills and speed displayed by the premier grade players in the Open Ladies Division.
In the 17 and under division, local teams gained valuable experience by playing against overseas teams, which Puia-Fraser said was “a first for most”.
“It was awesome working alongside our overseas umpires who were very flexible and accommodating with officiating games. Umpires were assured that they did not umpire back-to-back games to allow for plenty of rest.”
The tournament culminated with an awards ceremony that took place on Friday, December 8, at The Islander Hotel.
The Netball in Paradise Tournament is Netball Cook Islands’ major fundraiser, with proceeds supporting the development of netball in the country.
This year, the competition featured 23 international teams and two local teams.
It has been confirmed that next year’s tournament will be held from Friday, December 1 to December 6.
