Tupapa Panthers Club has become the talk of the town, making headlines for their remarkable achievements in rugby league this year. From the under-14s to the premier men’s and women’s teams, they’ve all secured spots in the grand finale this weekend.

This unprecedented success is credited to the club’s strong emphasis on teamwork and unity, which has transformed them into a tight-knit family.

Speaking with Julieanne Westrupp, a veteran player for the Tupapa Lady Panthers, she expressed, “We have a very family-oriented team.”

This sentiment rings true as the club boasts several familial connections within its coaching and playing staff. Two mother-daughter duos, Tashi and Julz along with Koa, and Edon and Jamie alongside Ed, serve as co-coaches, exemplifying the close bonds within the club.

Adding to the family dynamic are sisters Maruia and June Willie, whose father, Maru Willie, holds the esteemed position of club president. Bianca and her husband Henry Herman take on managerial roles, further cementing the sense of kinship within the team. Meanwhile, player Mii Piri’s brother Darren Piri serves as the men’s coach, showcasing yet another familial connection driving the club’s success.

However, Westrupp is quick to point out that every member of the team is valued equally, stating, “No one is extra special. We are all treated the same.”

Colati Ravula, the captain of the Tupapa Panthers men’s team, shares similar sentiments, emphasising the importance of hard work and unity.

“Training has been consistent, and keeping a positive attitude and mindset with coach Darren Piri has been crucial.”

Despite facing losses throughout the season, Colati stresses, “We just had to keep our focus and keep moving forward, not letting those moments weigh us down.”

He highlights the sensational brotherhood within the team, noting, “We train, pray, play together, and unity has been our secret weapon.”
This strong bond among teammates has been instrumental in their success, reflecting the club’s overarching ethos of teamwork and togetherness.

Head coach Darren Piri summarises the essence of the Tupapa Panthers’ success, emphasising the importance of nurturing a love for the game and fostering a supportive environment.

“It’s all about looking after the players and giving them a reason to love the game.”

Coach Piri’s approach extends beyond the field, as he encourages senior players to mentor and inspire younger teammates, promoting a culture of companionship and growth within the club.

The sense of companionship extends beyond the field, with the team coming together to pray on Saturday mornings, giving thanks to the Lord for their blessings. This ritual further strengthens the bonds between teammates, emphasising their shared values and beliefs.

Training sessions serve as another opportunity for the entire club to come together, with all teams – from the premier men’s and women’s squads to the under-16s and under-14s – training simultaneously at Victoria Park.

This unified approach to training not only promotes unity but also allows players of all ages to learn from and support one another.

“We are a united family, and it starts with our executives, having a ripple effect on the management teams of all 4 teams and all of our players,” Westrupp said.

The Cook Islands Rugby League Rarotonga 13s competition grand finale will be held this Saturday the National Stadium in Nikao. In the women’s final, Lady Panthers will take on Lady Bulldogs while in the men’s, the Panthers will battle Avatiu Nikao Eels.
