‘Game changer’: Women dominate rugby coaching workshop in Aitutaki

In a perfect lead-up to International Women’s Day, which was marked on Saturday, the Cook Islands Rugby Union (CIRU) saw a huge turnout of women at a Quickrip Coaches Workshop in Aitutaki last Wednesday.

The workshop conducted by Cook Islands Rugby Union development manager Ben Koteka was part of its Pa Enua outreach Healthy Living Programme – a fun and interactive way to teach the young ones the importance of a healthy lifestyle – with rugby at the heart of the action.

A six-week-long programme, launched last month, sees members of Cook Islands Rugby Union and local non-governmental organisation Korero o te Orau visiting southern group islands to run this programme.

Last week, they visited Aitutaki and on Wednesday, Cook Islands Rugby Union held the Quickrip Coaches Workshop.

In a Facebook post, CIRU said the Quickrip Coaches Workshop saw over 20 teacher-coaches in attendance – “99 per cent of them were women!”

“This is more than just a workshop; it’s a game changer for rugby in the Cook Islands,” the post stated. “Seeing so many women step up as leaders, coaches, and role models for our young players is a powerful shift. It means more girls will have female mentors to look up to, more communities will benefit from inclusive coaching, and the future of our sport will be shaped by a diverse and dynamic group of leaders.”

“To every woman who showed up – you are paving the way. This is what progress looks like.”

Nicolea Mateariki of Korero o te Orau stated that the coaches workshop, held at Vaitau School, was aimed at individuals interested in advancing their sports education, with a focus on World Rugby

“Our focus was based around important values and identity, key areas to help athletes reach their goals and better your coaching skills as an individual. Learning the different rules and how to adapt to them quickly while taking action on the fields,” Mateariki said.

“Around 20 participants showed up which helped us get through our workshop successfully.

“This connects to the works we do as an organisation, relating to the healthy living nature that Kōrero O te ‘Ōrau continues to practice and teach our students each day.”

On Saturday to mark International Women’s Day, Cook Islands Rugby Union said they honour the incredible Vaine Toa who are shaping the future of rugby in the country.

“From our female leaders on the Cook Islands Rugby Union board to the dedicated coaches, managers, volunteers, and players – your passion, resilience, and commitment continue to drive our game forward,” the rugby union said.

“Rugby is more than just a sport; it’s a community, a legacy, and a platform for empowerment.

“To the Vaine Toa breaking barriers, leading with strength, and inspiring the next generation – meitaki ma’ata! Your contributions, both on and off the field, are the backbone of our rugby family.”

After visiting Mitiaro, Mauke and Aitutaki, the Cook Islands Rugby Union and Korero o te Orau team have landed in Atiu and are ready to take on the students of Apii Enuamanu this week.
