Cook Islands Rugby League’s (CIRL) domestic 13s competition defending champion Avatiu Eels solidified their reputation as a formidable force showcasing their prowess on the field against the returning Takuvaine (TKV) Warriors on Saturday.

With their new line up, the Eels smashed through finishing 60 – 4 at Nukupere Park in Muri.

However, TKV has to be commended for their ongoing resilience on the field and all credit to their team and organisers for getting back into the competition.

In the second men’s competition, Tupapa Maraerenga Panthers scored 28 against the hosts Ngatangiia Matavera Sea Eagles with 12.

Panther’s speedy talented weapon Mafu Kalas was presented the Most Valuable Player of the Day award for his one try, and four goal kicks for a total of 12 points.

In a CIRL post-match interview, Panthers captain Eric Newbigging said their game was bit scrappy but they return this week and refocus on their game plan.

“The good thing about footy is we go again next week. We go back to the drawing board on Tuesday and work on the things we need to work on mainly just structure. Throughout the whole game there were times we looked lost and didn’t know what was going on… individuals doing their own thing."

Newbigging credited the Sea Eagles for coming out hard and thanked all the fans who turned out to watch.

Sea Eagles captain Junior Kirikava said they needed to work on their fitness and forwards.

Meanwhile, the women’s rugby league teams – Red/black and Blue/white - built up from a mix of players across the island offered a great first hit-out in the opening exhibition match that drew enthusiastic support from the crowd.

Red/black led by Rima Browne scored 24 points against the Blue/white team with 4 points led by Steph Joseph.

Both teams put in such a great effort as they showcased their energy, teamwork, passion, and joy for the game on field.

The women’s match was an effort to encourage more women and girls on the island to join the sport.

“We are struggling with numbers this season, so we are trying to grow interest,” said Cook Islands international sports representative and league player Julieanne “Julz” Westrupp.

“By doing this exhibition games we hope this will help us with numbers.”

She said the Arorangi women are ready to hit the field, however both Tupapa and Avatiu women’s teams are struggling.

If ladies are keen to play or learn the sport please reach out to Sunielia Tom for the Avatiu team, and Westrupp or Ed Teraitua for the Tupapa. Arorangi is coached by Willie Heather

The women’s league competition is anticipated to kick off on March 14, 2025.

The uniforms for both women’s teams on Saturday were supplied by the Maine Tueporo organisation run by Willie and Mene Heather, and the Arorangi Club.
