Papua New Guinea's deputy Police Commissioner has called for a total liquor ban during this year's general election, and even afterwards.

Anton Billie told the Post-Courier he would recommend a total ban during the polling period from June 25th to July 8th, and into the two-week counting period.

Billie said there are issues which are alcohol-related, and the police want to ensure that the election runs safely.

He said the government must take into consideration the impact alcohol has in the communities.

Billie noted that there are cheap alcohol brands that are very dangerous.

"The Government must step in and think about how we can have a peaceful election."

Goroka MP and committee chairman Aiye Tambua said the deputy Commissioner's suggestion was good and in line with their thinking.

"There will be total 100 percent alcohol ban across the country, not just in a particular province or area, it brings stability to the country it is very important that we recommend this, and I totally agree with police hierarchy to have the issue raised," Tambua said.

"The ban is not for a long time, it is during the election period for at least eight weeks and people must listen and follow directives."

He said more discussions and consultations would be made with authorities on alcohol use in coming weeks.
