From summer heat to festive hazards, it’s important to take precautions to ensure your pets enjoy a safe and happy Christmas.
Here are some tips to keep your pets safe and comfortable this holiday season.
Keep decorations pet-safe
Christmas décor can be magical, but it’s essential to keep your pets in mind. Prevent accidents by anchoring your tree to avoid tipping and keep fragile ornaments out of reach. Items like tinsel, ribbons, and small decorations can pose choking hazards if ingested, so it’s best to avoid them or place them where pets can’t reach. Electrical cords should be tucked away to prevent chewing, which can result in injury.
Foods to avoid
Holiday foods can be harmful to pets, so be careful about what they can access. Chocolate and foods containing xylitol are toxic to pets and should always be kept well away. Avoid feeding pets table scraps, as fatty foods, and ingredients like onions, garlic, and raisins can cause serious health issues. Instead, treat your furry friends to goodies made specifically for them, ensuring they can safely enjoy a holiday treat without any risk.
Summer heat
For those celebrating Christmas in warmer climates like the Cook Islands, heatstroke is a serious risk for pets. Never leave pets in cars, as temperatures can rise to dangerous levels in minutes, even with the windows down. Keep fresh water readily available and ensure pets drink often to stay hydrated. If your pets are outdoors, provide plenty of shade and make sure they have a cool area to relax. Watch out for signs of heatstroke, including excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy. If you notice these symptoms, move your pet to a cooler area immediately and contact your vet. It’s also best to avoid exercising pets during the hottest parts of the day. Take them for walks in the early morning or evening when temperatures are lower.
Stay groomed and comfortable
Summer weather can bring grooming challenges for pets. Regular brushing helps prevent matting and removes loose fur, which can keep your pet cooler in hot weather. Protect your pet’s paws, as hot ground can burn sensitive pads; check and clean their feet after walks. Finally, ensure flea and worm treatments are up to date, as warm weather can increase the risk and the presence of parasites causing discomfort or illness.
Christmas is a wonderful opportunity to make memories with your family and pets. By keeping their safety and comfort in mind, you can ensure the season is joyful for the whole family. From Te Are Manu to your family, Merry Christmas and a safe, happy holiday for you and your pets!
