LETTERS: Stray dogs attacking pets

Dear Editor, you cannot turn a dog away from attacking people or animals.

Put them down (‘Stray do’ mauls pet cat to death, distraught owner calls for immediate action, Cook Islands News, Saturday, March 12).

To have to wait another two years for a rule/law change is just ridiculous.

The government can change the rules for many other issues, including Covid, at a moment’s notice. Two years wait is pathetic.

How much simpler can it get - dog attacks another animal or a person - destroy. There you go, a new law written in 10 seconds. Now just get a couple of MPs to vote yes done!

Or is it that actually passing a sensible law quickly is beyond an MP’s capability ... or is it just that MPS dogs are responsible?

Friends were staying in a house rental in Arorangi and tried to save a cat being ripped apart by a pack of dogs. Bloody awful! Not what you want to remember about a holiday in your beautiful country.

This is just really sad. Just a reminder that if they (dogs) prey and kill cats it could be a little toddler one day. They are in a pack; they are hunting to kill.

If registered, the blame lands with the owner, if not registered and found and caught, sorry but time to be put to sleep.

I had the same experience a couple of years ago. A dog mauled my cat named Kitty to death. As much as I wanted to save her but there was no hope because she was badly mauled.

I cried because I saved her from being abandoned on the side of the road and was already abused. It was hard for her to come out but soon as I started feeding and taking care of her, she then started to feel comfortable with me and only to me. She hid when other people or random dogs came around. Sadly, her fear became true. I gave her a proper burial down the beach – she loved playing in the white sand.
