LETTERS: Covid-19 face mask mandate

Dear Editor, as an experienced qualified personal trainer l am concerned for the safety of my gym clients forced to wear a mask while training yet nightclubs can cram in 200 people without one?

The Government promised everybody that participating in this vaccine rollout was going to save your life and things will go back to normal.

So, how’s it going?

After three jabs you must wear a mask in church and gyms while 200 locals and visitors can party without a mask in our nightclubs. Just insulting and disgraceful how our Government treats its own people.

As it is quite obvious the masking is just a joke as we are allowing our locals to slobber all over tourists in crowded nightclubs but you obedient locals wear a mask when you train or sing through your mask at church is shameful!

Surely by now you all don’t think the Government has your best interest at heart? Now they aim to jab our babies too.

Stop this nonsense people. Isolate our damaged or vulnerable people to an outer island while we fight it out here.

But to think our leaders are really trying to protect you is delusional.

Aroa to the people,

Chris Denny

Real action, not just talk!

Sobering and eye-opening article (Grateful for the support, January 31) about Tabitha Ahsin’s drama during the storm over a week ago.

So sad to read that the policewoman who took the emergency call was initially unhelpful, only when another officer came on the emergency phone line, was there any sort of response. Even then however, there were only words of sympathy, and no actual help, apart from a government agency assessing the situation … but still no action, very poor!

And where was EMCI (Emergency Management Cook Islands) in all of this?

They will say they were unaware of the situation, of course they were unaware, because nowhere have they given out their own direct emergency number so they can respond to such urgent calls. That is part of your job. No excuses!

They should have an action team on standby, with emergency equipment, including large tarps to be used in such situations.

To his huge credit, Teariki Heather came to assist, and problem was solved within a couple of days, that is real action! Now there is a man of the people, not just talk!

Predeparture Covid tests

Still more people are being turned away when they get caught in check-in queues of travellers, often going on flights other than to Raro, and miss their time deadlines even by a few minutes.

There should be a date stamp given to them when they first enter the check-in queue or even when they are given their temperature check receipt.

People are holding up these lines because they don’t approach the check-in counter with the right documentation.

Having passengers for other flights in the same queue with different Covid expectations didn’t help. Yet it is people who have been waiting to check-in for the Raro flights who are getting caught by the new timing expectation and now have to pay another $250 or more for a new Covid test within the 48hours of their next flight, as well the rebooking fee. This is just becoming ridiculous.
