Letter: ‘Norman will make it work!’

Dear Editor, Re: Norman George’s application for the position of police commissioner (without pay for two years) in Cook Islands News, Monday, January 13, edition. Should he be even considered? Absolutely!

Not only is he available right now at a major time of policing crisis in Rarotonga to take up the position, but his qualifications speak for themselves. And apart from anything else, he is offering his services free of charge, with only one stipulation, which is to get a daily ride to and from the Head Office. Patrol car … QED! The only catch seems to be that the current Police Minister/PM does not view Norman as one of his “favourite uncles”? Even though the Minister might acknowledge privately that Norman would probably do a very good job of jump starting the Police Service, which is really struggling and sadly in need of leadership. Sadly, the Minister since his tenure, has shown he is totally incapable of providing that leadership. So, Mr Brown, this is a new year, time to get off your flight schedule, time to stop pretending to aspire to be the Henry Kissinger of the South Seas and give your support to this job application. Focus only on the wellbeing of the Cooks. Norman will make it work! And you Mr. Brown have nothing to lose, and Rarotonga and the Cook Islands has everything to gain.
