Letter: More storage

One of the justifications of the water upgrade was that 60-70 per cent of the water collected via the intakes was lost to leaks in the ring main. Can anyone on the island recall great fountains gushing out?

Ok so we have “fixed” all the leaks with a new ring main. Logic now says we should have 60-70 per cent more water available. I doubt it as we have To Tatou Vai telling us to save every little drop, don’t wash cars, etc.

Now we have the new lie from the US who states that consumption will go down by 20 per cent if you start charging for it? The only way to stop consumption is to “off the tap at the intake”. The net outcome of this is the intakes will fill and overflow to waste. Like it does every time we have heavy rain.

When this project first started at $30 million, an engineer on the back of an envelope calculated 3000 families having a 25,000-litre tank at a cost of $5000 each retail. Total cost $15m. 25,000 litres would last a family of five 31 days based on the 200 litre per person per day. 25,000 litres x 3000 households provide 7.5 million litres of storage facility.

Come on Sam, Des and Vac, you are practical people don’t be pushed around by the academics who think they know best and the politicians. That’s why we are in a mess now.

More storage. It’s so obvious!
