Letter: Future of netball at stake

I just found out at the weekend that the Rarotonga club netball season for grades below premier will run for one round.

This is pathetic.

Who is the future for Cook Islands netball? The premiers or the children?

It is at the age-grade level where one witnesses pure enjoyment from both players and spectators, and pulls in support from the parents. Not at premier level.

One would be lucky to see about 20 supporters from each side (not including the children who have played earlier and are only there because their mums are still there) watching the premier game at the end of the day.

The competition for all grades under 16 should run for at least 10 weeks – not five weeks.

I believe Netball Cook Islands will play the three premier grades at one venue during the week after the conclusion of the first round, and I wish them all the best.

However I guarantee if a junior muster were to be held at the same time as the proposed premier grades – I know where most netball supporters will be.
