Letter: Constitution Amendment Bill

I’m sure that Leader of the Opposition Tina Browne in her observations of Niue’s recent referendum was being sarcastic, when she said: “Sadly the article does not give reasons why more than double the voters voted against increasing the term of Parliament.”

But we can speculate. Perhaps the public has trust issues, perhaps they consider politicians self-serving, so want to replace them before they get too comfortable?

Could that be why the Niuean public voted for greater independence with the NZ Auditor-General being their official auditor?

The public know all too well that official oversight positions like the Opposition or in this case the Director of Audit are too weak or easily influenced by Ministers and politicians?

But that’s Niue. Nothing like that happens here!
