Letter:  Compensation ordinance in need of updating

I read with interest last week’s articles about the TAU electrocution incident.

I am shocked to learn that the Cook Islands Workers Compensation Ordinance is from 1964.

I do not know what is in this ordinance, but I am thinking that it must be well overdue for an update. What was acceptable 60 years ago is quite likely not acceptable now.

For example, for pretty much any sports injury back then, even if from illegal stomping or a punch up, the injured was likely just to be given an aspirin, then told to grin and bear it. Would they have been given time off work to recover? Possibly not.

Sooooo much has changed since then.
