While the article addresses significant points made by the Prime Minister during his speech at the Are Ariki 53rd Annual General Meeting, I believe it misses the mark in properly reflecting the true focus of the event.
The 53rd AGM of the Are Ariki was an important occasion centered on the deliberations and discussions of the House of Ariki. The Prime Minister’s speech, while appreciated and aligned with the views of the House on various government initiatives, should not have overshadowed the broader discussions held at the meeting. The title of the article implies that the meeting was primarily about the government’s proposals, particularly on the passport initiative, when in fact, the event was centered around the House of Ariki and its own agenda.
Moreover, I must clarify the point raised about the Cook Islands passport initiative. The article seems to suggest that this proposal is tied to the country’s push for UN membership. However, during our interview, this connection was not part of our agenda nor was it discussed. I believe the interviewer has taken some liberties in framing the article in a way that was not reflective of the actual conversation.
I kindly urge the media to ensure that their reporting stays true to the content of discussions and events, rather than sensationalising certain aspects to create a narrative that may not fully represent what transpired. Let us stay focused on what truly matters – our discussions and decisions at the 53rd AGM of the Are Ariki.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Yours sincerely,
Dr. Tuaine Unuia
