According to Tourism, the Kia Orana Ambassador Programme is inspiring Cook Islanders to embrace responsible tourism in their daily lives.
“This initiative transforms ambassadors into guardians of our little paradise, ensuring our islands remain a cherished and thriving home for both Cook Islanders and visitors,” Tourism said in a statement. “Through education, advocacy, and leadership, the programme promotes the Kia Orana Values—encouraging respect for our culture, environment, and people.”
Recently, the team responsible for the programme visited Pacific Resort Rarotonga and The Edgewater Resort, engaging with frontline tourism workers on how Kia Orana Values can enhance visitor experiences while preserving the country’s natural and cultural integrity.
“Staff responded positively, recognising their role as stewards of our environment and culture,” the team said.
The programme has also reached out to schools, including Apii Nikao, Apii Takitumu, Avarua School and Nukutere College, where students and teachers warmly embraced the message.
Discussions highlighted how young people can contribute to responsible tourism, fostering a sense of pride and stewardship from an early age.
The Kia Orana Values Ambassador Programme will now extend its outreach to church groups and uniformed organisations, reinforcing these values within key community pillars.
“The programme will also take its message to the Pa Enua, ensuring schools across the outer islands are included in this movement.
“Kia Orana Ambassadors are shaping a future where tourism and community well-being go hand in hand, ensuring the Cook Islands remain a special place for generations to come.”
