The New Zealand Diaspora Consultation 2024 reflects the Government’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with Cook Islanders abroad. Community members will have the opportunity to ask questions, share insights, and contribute to shaping the nation’s future.
Brown said in a statement released yesterday, “This is an invaluable opportunity for connection and dialogue with Cook Islanders in New Zealand, who play a crucial role in our shared vision for the Cook Islands.”
He said the consultations are a chance for Cook Islanders living in New Zealand to join the conversation on our nation’s future, particularly in areas that impact us all such as sustainable resource management and the celebration of our unique heritage.
“As we approach our 60th anniversary of self-governance, the Cook Islands remains committed to sustainable progress, environmental stewardship, and strengthening community bonds.”
Brown’s visit reinforces the Cook Islands’ commitment to sustainable progress, cultural pride, and its enduring partnership with New Zealand.
“We look forward to meeting with our New Zealand diaspora. Together, we’ll strengthen our community and collectively contribute to a thriving, resilient Cook Islands global community,” he said.
These consultations are organised by the Cook Islands Seabed Minerals Authority (SBMA), the Office of the Prime Minister, and the Cook Islands New Zealand High Commission, with the aim of updating the diaspora on important national developments, including progress in the seabed minerals sector and the Cook Islands coming 60th anniversary of self-governance in 2025.
The SBMA will share the latest updates in the seabed minerals sector, focusing on responsible exploration and environmental protection. The discussions will outline the Cook Islands’ commitment to sustainability, showcasing how seabed resource management is balanced with environmental safeguards and people empowerment. This approach aims to create broad opportunities while preserving the marine environment, setting a new benchmark for sustainable resource development in the Pacific.
The Cook Islands New Zealand Consultation Dates and Locations are: Monday 18 November – Auckland, Tuesday 19 November – Wellington, Wednesday 20 November – Christchurch, Thursday 21 November – Dunedin, Friday 22 November - Tokoroa
