Cook Islands and Republic of Poland establish diplomatic relations

Cook Islands has established its 68th diplomatic partner in Poland, with the aim of exploring potential areas of cooperation in the blue economy and regional security.

According to a joint statement from the Cook Islands High Commission in New Zealand and the Embassy of Poland, the two countries have officially formalised diplomatic and consular relations through the exchange of notes, marking the establishment of a new partnership.

The occasion was celebrated yesterday by the Cook Islands High Commissioner to NZ, Kairangi Samuela, and the Polish Head of Mission, Patryk Blaszczak,

at the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Wellington.

Cook Islands and Poland welcome the opportunity to explore potential areas of cooperation including in areas such as environmental sustainability, blue economy, education, and regional security, the statement said.

Cook Islands High Commissioner Samuela said: “Poland’s establishment as our 68th diplomatic partner is a great step forward for the Cook Islands.”

“We are excited about the opportunity of deepening our relationship with Poland, particularly at a time when partnerships are critical. We look forward to building meaningful cooperation across various sectors.”

Blaszczak, Head of Mission of Poland in Wellington, said: “Poland is looking forward to strengthening bilateral cooperation with the Cook Islands on shared priorities, as well as within the multilateral fora.”

“The establishment of diplomatic and consular relations marks a new chapter of partnership and cooperation between our nations.”

Notably, Poland has held the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union since January 1, 2025, the statement added.
