Urgent alert: spear phishing email

Cook Islands government is advising the public to remain vigilant against a targeted spear phishing email campaign currently circulating in the Cook Islands.

These emails, crafted by cyber criminals, are designed to look as though they come from reputable businesses, but they are fraudulent attempts to gain access to systems and personal information.

“We urge everyone to take extra caution when opening emails, especially those that appear unexpected or unfamiliar. Be particularly careful with links or attachments within emails, as these are often used to install malicious software or capture sensitive data.”

Here are some tips to help you stay safe:

  • Verify the sender’s email address carefully, especially in emails that ask you to click on links or provide information.
  • Do not click on links or open attachments from unfamiliar or unexpected sources.
  • Report suspicious emails to your IT support or service provider immediately.
  • Stay alert to protect yourself and your data.
