Public Service Commissioner Carl Hunter confirmed the employment contract of the Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs will expire on February 13, 2024.
“Mindful that this is Ms Herman’s second term as Head of Ministry for Internal Affairs, my office has commenced a recruitment process for the said post,” Hunter said.
Hunter said the Public Service Act 2009 requires that a full recruitment process is undertaken for any Head of Ministry (HOM) who has completed two three-year terms as in the case of Herman.
“In saying that, however, Ms Herman is eligible to apply for the post again if she is keen to take on this role for a third term.
“In saying that, however, Ms Herman’s application will be processed and thoroughly considered by the selection panel, as with any other applications for the post that are received by my office before the given deadline.”
Cook Islands News reached out to Herman for comment.
Hunter said it had also been brought to his attention that there are a number of HOMs who are nearing the completion of their second terms, meaning that their posts will be advertised as per the Act.
The position has been advertised, stating the head of Internal Affairs is responsible for leading and steering the provision of social protection services in relation to the welfare of vulnerable members of the population, promoting social development and inclusiveness, and regulating commerce and employment in the Cook Islands.
The HOM is accountable for ensuring public service excellence through the effective and efficient delivery of the Ministry’s functions and government policies.
All applications must be addressed to the Public Service Commissioner and include a cover letter and CV. Applications must be received by 4pm Saturday November 18, 2023 (CI time).
