The programme was in collaboration with the Engineers Without Borders and South Pacific Commission (SPC) for five days.
ICI’s senior manager of Pa Enua Support Services Otheniel Tangianau (OD) hopes that by participating in the training, these water professionals “will gain a better appreciation and understanding of the process of each island's supply systems and networks.”
Tangianau said they hope the operators and technicians will gain a deeper understanding of pipe and pumping networks so when they encounter operational issues they understand what has gone wrong and what needs to happen to rectify the issue.”
ICI actioned the training after it was identified that Pa Enua water professionals are often thrusted into their roles without receiving the appropriate capacity building knowledge that would enable them to understand and conduct premium operations of their respective water supply systems and networks.
Last month a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed between secretary of Infrastructure Cook Islands Elizabeth Wright-Koteka, Aitutaki mayor Nicholas “Nick” Henry, and MP Teokotai Herman for a new solar-powered pump system to be installed to improve water management efficiency and supply.
Henry had said that in the water upgrade process, the “oro vai” workers gained a dedicated workshop and spare parts storage premises.
The ongoing training and upskilling were funded by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT).
