Anyone capable of taking on an outer island leadership role including mayorship is encouraged to enter the upcoming Island Government election.

The Pa Enua is preparing for the election of mayors and council members of the Island Government set to be held on August 15, 2024.

Mia Teaurima, director of Island Governance at the Office of the Prime Minister, says mayor is a key leadership role and critical to decision making in managing the affairs of the island government of the respective islands.

“So anyone who has the capability to take on the role is encouraged to raise their hands and get nominated.”

Teaurima said without doubt, some of the current mayors would be contesting again in the upcoming election.

All eligible citizens are encouraged to ensure that their voices are heard by casting their vote on the 15th of August.

Taggy Tangimetua, government statistician and chief electoral officer, says nominations of candidates will close on July 29.

Tangimetua said the priority now is to update the electoral rolls.
