The island of Akatokamanava celebrated the last festive event of the year by welcoming the New Year with the traditional Raoni event this week. Nicolea Mateariki reports.

The village of Kimiangatau hosted Oiretumu on New Year’s Day, Wednesday, as the entire island, along with visiting family and friends, reunited to continue celebrating the festive season.

On Thursday, Areora Makatea (Oiretumu) held a picnic day for those within the village to come together and acknowledge their great success during the past few weeks, where they prepared to feed almost the whole island on Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Rarotonga’s Eleanor Wichman, a medical student at Otago University who is visiting Mauke, enjoyed the festive celebrations on the island.

“This festive season in Mauke was truly unforgettable. Every moment was filled with joy, laughter, and, of course, delicious locally made food!” shared Wichman.

“I was able to embrace the simplicity and authenticity of island life.”

The highlight for her was the Oiretumu Ra’oni held on New Year’s Day, showcasing a vibrant celebration of thanksgiving and togetherness.

Watching the community come alive with traditional dances, songs and customs filled Wichman with pride and awe.

“Everyone sang, danced, at, and celebrated as one, creating a beautiful sense of unity to welcome the year ahead.”

As Wichman reflects on the day, she feels an overwhelming sense of peace and gratitude for having been part of such a meaningful celebration and is happy to be spending this festive season with a few of her loved ones.

Pongi Oti, who returned to Mauke for the Christmas and New Year’s celebrations, said it felt good to be back home and spend the festive season with the family.

Oti said the Raoni and Rangokare events brought people together with the aim of giving back to the community during this special time.

“We sing, eat and vibe along to great local music during these events and you feel the festive spirit all over again as each one enjoys themselves,” he explained.

“This year the island was packed and I could only imagine what 2025 will look like as we celebrate 60 years of self-governance.

“I also feel blessed spending the festive season with my two girls, and my youngest daughter surprising me on New Year’s Day. I can’t express how happy I am seeing my daughters witness our New Year’s and Christmas tradition here on the islands. I grew up learning this part of my culture with my parents and I am happy to share this with my own children as they continue to grow older.”

Oti said he also enjoyed the annual sports events held during the Christmas week.

“After a full on busy week of celebrations on the island, visitors are slowly starting to make their way back.”
