Five Cook Islands residents have officially received New Zealand citizenship, celebrating a significant milestone in their lives.

New Zealand High Commissioner to the Cook Islands Catherine Graham welcomed the new citizens yesterday at Ngatipa, with a warm address followed by the Oath of Allegiance by Elizabeth “Betsy” Althea Eisler, Grant Michael Walker, brothers Viriona Makaua and Toom Makaua, and Anthony “Tonga” Faafiatonga McBride Jr.

In her welcome address, Graham recited a powerful karakia that spoke of unity and the unbreakable bonds, acknowledging the ties between the two countries.

“It is in this spirit that we are gathering here today to honour you who will soon swear the Oath of Allegiance and become New Zealand citizens,” said Graham.

The recipients were “extremely grateful” to be officially recognised as Kiwis.

Viriona Makaua from Kiribati arrived in Rarotonga in 2016.

“I’m truly honoured and grateful, it’s about becoming part of a community, embracing its values and contributing to its future,” he said.
