Former health secretary Elizabeth Iro has been appointed to Te Aponga Uira (TAU) Board, effective 1 January 2025, announced the Cook Islands Investment Corporation (CIIC).

In a statement, CIIC Iro brings a wealth of experience in health leadership, governance and policy development.

Her distinguished career includes serving as chief nursing officer for the World Health Organization (2018-2023) and holding leadership roles within the Cook Islands health sector, including as Secretary of Health (2012-2017).

Iro holds a Diploma in Nursing, a Master of Health Science Degree and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) Degree.

CIIC board chairman Fletcher Melvin welcomed Iro’s appointment, highlighting the value of her leadership and governance experience.

“We are delighted to welcome Elizabeth to the TAU Board. Her extensive expertise and leadership in policy development and governance will be an asset as we continue to strengthen and deliver quality infrastructure and services for the Cook Islands,” said Melvin.

TAU board chairman Donald Buchanan also expressed his support for the appointment, stating: “Elizabeth’s deep understanding of policy, regulations, and legislative frameworks will be invaluable in guiding Te Aponga Uira.”

“We look forward to working alongside her to ensure the continued delivery of reliable and sustainable energy solutions for our people.”

Iro’s appointment aligns with CIIC’s commitment to strong governance, leadership and the ongoing development of critical national assets for the benefit of the Cook Islands, the statement said.
