Among the trio of Christmas babies was little Maria Kalas, born at 4.17pm, weighing a healthy seven pounds.
For new mother Rua Ben, Maria’s arrival was nothing short of a miracle.
“She’s a Christmas miracle, I would say,” said Rua, reflecting on her challenging yet rewarding three-day labour.
“It was a very hard three-day labour, but it was all worth it.”
Maria’s name is a blend of family tradition. Rua explained that both her mother and the baby’s father’s mother share the name “Maria”, while the last name, Kalas, comes from her partner’s family.
“Maria is both my mother’s name and the father’s mother's name. Kalas is the dad’s last name,” Rua shared.
The birth of Maria on Christmas Day is considered a rare event, according to hospital sources who wished to remain unnamed.
Even in recent years, births on Christmas Day have been infrequent.
“There was one ages ago, but it’s rare to have babies born on Christmas Day here in Rarotonga,” said one local official.
Rua’s labour was supported by her mother, little brother, and the baby’s father, who were by her side throughout the long process.
“Honestly, I never thought I’d fall in love again until this one came into our lives. But the pain was worth it, that’s all I can say,” Rua reflected on the emotional journey.
Despite the challenges, Rua expressed gratitude for the team of midwives who assisted her throughout the delivery.
“I’ll probably just stay grateful for all the midwives that have been working for our deliveries to make sure they’re successful,” she said.
As for the future, Rua’s simple wish for her daughter is happiness and strength.
“My goal for my baby is just to be happy and strong,” she said.
