A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed between Punanga Turuturu Itivaine, formerly known as Punanga Tauturu Inc., and Te Marae Ora Ministry of Health to “enhance and strengthen support” for all women in the Cook Islands.

Punanga Turuturu Itivaine, the Cook Islands Women’s Counselling Centre, support and work with survivors of violence and abuse.

Eileen Story, president of Punanga Turuturu Itivaine (PTI), and Bob Williams, Secretary of Te Marae Ora, signed the two-year agreement last week.

The MOU focuses on several key areas for cooperation. They include improving current support systems and creating new initiatives to assist women dealing with domestic violence, mental health issues and other difficulties.

Williams highlighted the significance of this partnership.

“Today’s MOU shows our commitment to working together, making sure our women get the support they deserve. By combining our resources, we can tackle the challenges that women face in our communities,” he said.

Story is excited about the partnership.

“This MOU is a major moment for us. Our new name reflects our dedication to our mission, and we are eager to work with Te Marae Ora to bring real change for all women in our community,” she said.

Story expressed that the objective of this MOU is to “outline the collaborative efforts to enhance the health and wellbeing of women who are survivors of domestic violence, abuse, and gender-based violence in the Cook Islands”.

She stated that the working relationship between PTI and TMO will ensure that survivors have access to a comprehensive package of care, including medical services, counselling, legal assistance, and shelter support when necessary.

The signing ceremony took place on Friday at Te Marae Ora, marking an exciting new chapter for the Punanga Turuturu Itivaine, which has recently rebranded itself with new executive board members, staff, and logo.

Both PTI and TMO are looking forward to the future, with plans for community awareness campaigns, workshops and better access to resources for women to create a safer and healthier environment for women in the Cook Islands.

Story added that the MOU shows a shared vision for a brighter future and reinforces the commitment of both Te Marae Ora and Punanga Turuturu Itivaine to support the women of the Cook Islands in achieving support, safety and empowerment.
