Shipment for a container of fertiliser to Rarotonga has been arranged and it is expected to arrive by mid-May if not earlier, says the Ministry of Agriculture.

Growers have been facing a crisis of fertiliser shortages as the last container arrived on November 23^rd last year.

Matavera farmer Te Ngamata said he ran out of fertiliser about a week and a half ago.

Ngamata, who last ordered fertiliser in November 2023, said he normally orders a few bags per month at $65 per bag (20 kilos).

He is calling on the Ministry of Agriculture to keep fertilisers in stock or increase their orders to ensure the stock lasts until the next shipment.

Secretary for Agriculture Temarama Anguna-Kamana confirmed they were sold out by February 24.

“We have placed an order for a container of fertiliser following approval from MFEM for some funds for the purchase,” Anguna-Kamana said. “The suppliers have advised they are packing and will arrange shipment. We hope to receive the container by mid-May if not earlier.”

“We have our normal number of commercial and semi commercial farmers who require fertiliser to assist with their planting that includes the Pa Enua also.”

The fertiliser shortage issue was brought to public attention by grower and former Agriculture minister Kiriau Turepu, who had previously told Cook Islands News that Mangaia and Aitutaki farmers were also struggling.

Anguna-Kamana said: “We empathise with our farmers, but we are unable to provide fertiliser if we have none in stock.”

Looking at homemade/natural fertilisers, she said the ministry does promote organic options (composting etc.), but the farmers still require fertiliser.

The ministry has advised farmers that they are endeavouring to bring in a container of fertiliser as soon as possible.

The Ministry supplies to over 50 farmers on Rarotonga and the Pa Enua of Aitutaki, Mangaia, Mauke, Atiu, and Mitiaro.
